Marco Di Lauro  Niger, Food Crisis. The desperate plight of people in Niger during a famine brought on by drought. The carcasses are local farmers' animals that have starved to death. Meat traders in the area are buying the dying or dead animals for a fraction of the going rate from farmers desperate to get what they can to feed their families.

Walter Astrada  Rape, Weapon of War in Congo: Nzigire, 25, rests in a bed in Gersom Hospital in Goma (October 17, 2008). Nzigire, from a region near Goma called Sake, was raped by 3 members of the CNDP (Congrès National pour la Défense du Peuple/National Congress for the Defence of the People). They also shot her in her the breast. She was found and cared for by a female counselor from Sake, and later diverted to Gersom Hospital where they removed the bullet from her breast. Nzigire now suffers from mental disorders; she does not speak, she refuses to eat, and lies in bed the whole day.

Kent Klich  Gaza Photo Album. Light enters through a hole in the roof of a house hit by a tank shell in Tuffah, northern Gaza. The family that lived in the house had fled during Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli attack on Gaza that began at the end of December 2008. Mohammed Shuhada Ali Ahmed, 39, had gone back to fetch clothes for his children and was killed when the shell struck.


Li Yang  A 22-year-old woman in a wedding gown is grabbed by Guo Zhongfan, a local community officer, as she attempts to kill herself by jumping out of a seven-story residential building in Changchun, Jilin province, on May 17, 2011. According to local media, the woman tried to commit suicide after her boyfriend of four years broke up with her, just as they were making plans to get married. The woman did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

Kemal Jufri  Indonesia’s Mount Merapi spews massive heat clouds of volcanic ash and rocks seen from Ngaglik district, Yogyakarta. As a result of Indonesia geographically located directly on top of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, the country is home to over 100 active volcanoes. On October 26, 2010, Indonesia’s most active volcano for the first time erupted with an uncharacteristic direct vertical blast of hot ashes reaching a kilometer and a half into the sky.
